The EDC Update!
September 2019
Starting School
September has been an exciting adventure for everyone in EDC! Our students are now becoming comfortable in
the classroom. Meeting new friends has
helped everyone feel excited to participate in all the fun activities every
day!
This month, our focus has been on establishing consistent and
predictable routines to support our learner’s awareness of expectations. Each day we follow a similar routine. Here is what a typical day might look like:
Arrival Routine
- students learn to manage their
personal belongings, hanging up their coat
and
changing their shoes
Table Time - Open exploration of activities such
as puzzles or play dough
Movement Time - we play in the gym, Project
room or outside to develop our gross
motor
skills
Circle Time - we gather on the carpet to read a
story about our key topic. We also engage in
interactive activities such as singing,
dancing or
using props that support the development
of
speech and language skills
Targeted Activities
- Activities that target
specific
skills to develop fine motor skills,
social skills and language development
Music and Gym class -
Tuesday
afternoon or Thursday morning
Bathroom Routine
- we use the bathroom or
change diapers then wash hands
Snack - students sit together to eat their snack
as a community
Book time - quiet time to look at books
Free play - students
are encouraged to choose
favourite toys and games where they can
interact with their classmates while
learning
new skills such as social communication,
turn
taking sharing and cooperation. Adults
provide support by participating with the
play
and following the children’s lead.
Dismissal routine
- supporting the student’s as
they get ready for home, putting on
their
coats and shoes, and learning to line up to
walk to the bus or parent for pick up.
I hope this helps give you a better idea of how we spend our
day. It is always busy and never boring!
Looking ahead to October!
As we move into October, we will be learning about Fall by reading
books and playing games that help us learn about leaves, pinecones and
pumpkins. Our House Centre will be
transformed into a Pumpkin Patch, where we will be pretending to sell “Pumpkin
Pie” and “Pumpkin Spice Latte”. The
students will also be invited to go on a “Hay Ride” in our classroom
wagon. We will also talk about things we
are Thankful for, like family, friends and school. Later in the month, we will discover Monsters
- the friendly, cute ones as we learn about Halloween.
Here
are two of the books we will be reading in October.
