Weekly Learning Plan: April 27 to May 1, 2020

As you know, we have been given guidelines from Alberta Education that mandates we provide 5 hours of schoolwork per week focused on literacy and math. We also hope to offer some optional activities that you might consider having a look at towards the bottom of the template.  Each week we also hope that you will be able to determine a schedule that works best for your family.  We ask that you please be patient with this process as we all know technology can be a bit bumpy at times.

Task Three:  Making Binoculars
EDC has made these binoculars already this year, so they might remember how to put them together.  Use the binoculars for a few of the games we are playing, such as I Spy or when going on a neighborhood walk.  What can you see?

Learning Outcomes
·      Circle Time Routines
o   Listening Skills
o   Focus and attention
o   Participation
·      This week we are reading stories about Ducks!

Task One:  Circle Time Video - watch this once a day!

Task Description:
·      Circle Time Routine plan using visuals
·      Hello Song – encourage your child to sing along.   Here are the words:
Hi, Hi Hello!   Hi, Hi Hello!
       It’s time for circle!
Hi, Hi Hello!   Hi, Hi Hello!
       It’s time for circle now.
       Hello (Child’s name)
       Hello (Child’s name)
       Hello (Child’s name)
       Hello (Child’s name)
Hi, Hi Hello!   Hi, Hi Hello!
       It’s time for circle now.
·      This week’s story is: Daisy Duckling’s Adventure by Maurice Pledger
·      This week’s song is: Five Little Ducks: An old Rhyme  Illustrated by Pamela Paparone

Story and Song Follow-up
·      Use items from around your house to make a “play scene” with your child, ideas include: a bunched-up blanket for the hill, a carpet for the water, etc.  Invite your child to be one of the little ducks who go “over the hill and far away”. Make it into a hide and seek game with the whole family.   Remember to take turns hiding and seeking.
·      Make a small version of the story from craft items: Lego, play dough, toys, etc.  Invite your child to sing the song as they act out the story.
·      Play Hide and Seek with stuffed toys – hide several toys and ask your child to locate one special one, just like Daisy did in her adventure.
·      Add language to the play by modeling the phrases “I see you” “Where are you?” or “Oh, look ...”, “quack, quack, quack ...”
·      Sing the song again when in the bath or playing at the sink.  Splish, splash, splosh! – see below for more water play ideas!

Observation and Feedback:
·      Observe your child as they participate in Circle Time.
·      Are they using words or phrases independently or repeating them when you say them?
·      For our older EDC students – are they able to make multiple comments in a back to back manner.  Have them Strive for Five conversational turns when they are playing.

Task Two:  Animal Walks Gross Motor Activity

Materials:
·      Open space where kids can move their bodies safely (i.e. hallway, basement, living room or the back yard (especially when it is nicer outside).
·      Animal Walk cards – attached to the email

Instructions:
·      Show the pictures of the animal and person doing the action (i.e. Bear Walk – show the bear and the child walking with both hands and both feet on the floor and bottom up in the air)
·      Play this as a Red Light, Green Light game (as described in the April 1st Blog)
·      Play it as a Stop and Go game – show them the pictures then play some music while they walk.  Stop the music, show a new animal then turn on the music again
·      For more fun, check out the online book of Eric Carle’s From Head to Toe
              Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xxyZSdYEmM

Observations and Feedback:
·      Observe your child while they do the actions.  The goal is to do the movements accurately, not quickly.
·      Your child might benefit from a model – show them how to do the animal walk by doing it beside them.
·      Adjust their body so they are in the correct position.
·      Some animal walks are very hard, while others are rather easy.  Work toward the ones that are more difficult by holding the pose for seconds rather than a minute or two.

Task Three: Creative Time – Water Table Play
Ducks love playing in the water!   EDC does too!!!!   Provide your child with water and they will explore, experiment and make lots of fun.

Materials:
·      Bathtub, Kitchen sink or a big tub of water (caution: things might get wet! J
·      Items from the kitchen include: measuring cups, clear plastic bottle, plastic bowls or cups, spoons, sponges, etc.
·      Items from the recycling bin include: clean empty bottles (ketchup, shampoo or dish soap), clean pop bottles, etc.
·      Waterproof toys

Instructions:
·      Fill the sink half full with warm water and add some items that allow your child to pour water from one container to another.
·      Add a few drops of dish soap to make the water bubbly or try a few drops of food colouring (use bubble bath if you are using the bathtub)
·      Include some items that float (i.e. corks, plastic egg, Duplo/Lego, popsicle stick, chop stick, foam shapes, etc.)
·      Include some items that sink (i.e. metal spoon, coins, stone, car/truck, glass marbles)
ALERT:  If you use small items such as coins or marbles, supervise your child closely so that the items do not get swallowed.

·      Use words such as pour, splash, fill, empty,
