EDC Ongoing Learning April 13 - 17, 2020

                                                             Mrs. Angela Klassen
Weekly Learning Plan: April 13 to 17, 2020

As you know, we have been given guidelines from Alberta Education that mandates we provide 5 hours of schoolwork per week focused on literacy and math. We also hope to offer some optional activities that you might consider having a look at towards the bottom of the template.  Each week we also hope that you will be able to determine a schedule that works best for your family.  We ask that you please be patient with this process as we all know technology can be a bit bumpy at times.

Opening Comments
Hello to all our EDC friends and families!

This week I would like to share some math games that you can play with your child.  The materials should be easy to find around your house.  Some of the activities might even give you some help with those household chores.

Matching/Sorting – using items around the house, create a matching game where your child can put items together:
·      Cutlery – put all the forks, spoons, knives together
·      Socks - Sort all the socks from the laundry basket
·      Lego – put the blocks together by colour
·      Magazine pictures (or pictures printed from the internet) – cut the pictures out and group them together (i.e. puppies, kittens, bunnies, etc.)
·      Toy food (or real food) – sort by colour or shape, such as all the apples in one pile and all the oranges in the other or all the purple Fruit Loops in one pile and all the green ones in a different pile
·      Have fun!

Learning Outcomes
·      Circle Time Routines
o   Listening Skills
o   Focus and attention
o   Participation
·      This week we are reading the Dog’s Colorful Day.  It is a messy story about colours and counting!

Task One:  Circle Time Video
Click on the Story Link – watch this once a day (or more if you like)!
Task Description:
·      Circle Time Routine plan using visuals
·      Hello Song – encourage your child to sing along.   Here are the words:
Hi, Hi Hello!   Hi, Hi Hello!
       It’s time for circle!
Hi, Hi Hello!   Hi, Hi Hello!
       It’s time for circle now.
       Hello (Child’s name)
       Hello (Child’s name)
       Hello (Child’s name)
       Hello (Child’s name)
Hi, Hi Hello!   Hi, Hi Hello!
       It’s time for circle now.
·      This week’s story is:   Dog’s Colorful Day  by Emma Dodd
This week’s song is: The Colour Song – a colour recognition game

Story Follow-up:
·      Explore your house, yard and neighbourhood (when out for a walk) to see what colours you can find.   Use the Bone Cards (from the activity below) to support your child on this fun Scavenger Hunt.
·      Invite them to use the colour the bones (attached in the email or draw your own) to extend the play from the story – feed a stuffed animal or have a puppy picnic
·      Revisit the Colour Song throughout the day (i.e. while getting dressed in the morning, eating dinner, playing with their toys, etc.).  Can they identify what colour their clothes are?  Can they choose their favourite colour marker?

Observation and Feedback:
·      Observe your child as they participate in Circle Time.
·      Encourage your child to use the words from the story when playing
·      Does your child recognize the colours?  Can they match the coloured bones with objects around the house?

Task Two:  Colour Concentration
Link:

Materials:
·      Bone Cards (if you have access to a printer)

·      Card paper, cereal box or other paper (if you do not have access to a printer)
o   Scissors, crayons or markers
o   Draw shapes (bones if you want but circles or squares are also good) on card paper, cut out and have your child colour two shapes the same colour (i.e. 2 red, 2 blue, etc.)
o   You need at least 4 pairs of cards but please do more if you want the game to be more challenging
Instructions:
·      Watch the video for details – link is above
·      Variations of this game can include:
o   Easy Level – let your child match the cards while looking at them
o   Medium Level – use 4 to 6 pairs of cards, turned upside down, taking turns to find a match
o   Challenge – the more pairs of cards, the more difficult the game becomes
o   Just for Fun:  Play Go Fish using the cards.  Encourage your to ask “Do you have a ....?”

Observation and Feedback:
·      Is your child able to identify 2 matching cards?  Can they match all the cards?
·      Encourage your child to talk about what they are doing as they play – label the colours, say “your turn” or “my turn”.
·      Support your child with waiting for their turn and showing good sportsmanship.

Task Three: Colour Collage
Materials:
·      Paper in a variety of colours
·      Scissors
·      Glue
·      Extras – buttons, stickers, glitter, pom poms, anything you have in your craft box
Instructions:
·      Have your child choose a paper to use as their background
·      Invite them to use the other colours and extras to make a collage of colour
·      Ideas for different skills and interests:
o   Beginner Level – let the kids rip the paper into pieces and glue them on the paper
o   Middle Level – Parent cuts the paper into strips then invite your child to SNIP it into smaller (but not too small) pieces then glue on the paper
o   Advanced – Invite your child to cut shapes from the paper and glue them onto the paper in a picture or pattern
·      This is a process art project, where the focus is on how the create their picture, not on what it ends up at the end.  Let your child’s creativity flow!

Observation and Feedback:
·      I would love to see a photo of these creations.  I will share some on the blog next week.
